Like an 8 pint of darkness

18 de febrer del 2024The short version is that the Sonos Sub-Mini when working under the optimum settings sounds rich and smoth, a power in the darkness that only makes itself known when soundtrack requires. In my medium-sized lounge, paired with a Sonos Arc, it proved more than powerful enough. RS were happy to price match Peter Tyson, and arranged delivery for the next day.
The more detailed version is that I took a chance on the Sonos Sub-Mini after trawling through umpteen reviews. Around half said that it was excellent with the Sonos Arc, and the other half preferred the bigger Sub (Gen3). A product I regarded as stupidly expnesive. My best guess was that the Sub (Gen 3) was for those who want ‘boom-boom shake the room’ wheras I only wanted to enhance the Arc’s already superb sound by offloading the lower bass. This was something I was already doing very successfully using an old KEF sub teamed with a new Sonos Amp and Monitor Audio Silver 100 7g speakers. Which, BTW, sounds absolutely fantastic. The Sonos Sub-Mini is about the same dimensions as an old 8 pint party sized beer can, matte black and unobtrusive. Setup with the Arc was easy, with the Sub-Mini being recognised as soon as it was plugged in, then added to the Arc group. The sound produced using settings from YouTube Hi-Fi reviewer Peter Pee proved to be just the job, producing satisfying tactile rumbles at the right time, and allowing the Arc’s own speakers more breathing room for mid range and upper bass. The entire sound was noticeably more expansive.
There was a glitch. After 24 hours, for a reason I have yet to fathom, the Sub-Mini stopped receiving from the Arc. I did every test as directed, rebooted and reinstalled, but nothing seemed to work. Then the next morning all was back in good working order! So I am, at this point, assuming that the Sub-Mini’s wireless connection can, on occasions get bumped off the home network. Just in case I now have a wired solution in the form of an ethernet cable going to a Devolo powerline adaptor. Not had to deploy this yet, but feel like I’m covered as much as I can be. One other thing to know is that in th Sonos App settings, ‘Disable Wi-Fi’ refers to SonosNet (how the Arc talks to other Sonos components wirelessly, and receives radio) NOT our home Network. So in the event of needing or preferring a wired connection, there is no need to disable Wi-Fi. Indeed, to do so would be quite detrimental.
Nice neat sub

30 de desembre del 2023I have a fair bit of Sonos kit, all bought to enhance the audio from whatever's playing through the TV. My Sub Mini is paired with a Beam on a Samsung 43" QLED TV in our kitchen - the wife wanted more volume so she could hear what she has on the TV when cooking. So I took advantage of Xmas 23 deals. The Sub Mini is pretty good, but perhaps not surprisingly lacks the presence and authority of the larger Sub product. Whilst the sub is described as mini it's not really that small, but I had no problem tucking it behind the TV in the kitchen sitting it on an oak sideboard. As you'd expect build quality is excellent as you'd expect from Sonos and the product was well packaged. Setup was easy which was executed via my Sonos app, and Bluetooth, I had to fiddle around with my phone a bit to get the near field addition of the sub completed - but got there in the end. Overall I'd recommend the Sub Mini for use in music systems, and for enhancing the audio from your TV, but for me personally if I was enhancing / putting in surround sound on my primary viewing system I'd use the Sub as opposed to the Sub Mini for this purpose. I'm writing this review from the perspective of someone who used to sell specialist audiophile equipment - so that may explain my preference for the more expensive Sonos products - I have two of the larger Subs in seperate systems.

The best addition so far.

12 de febrer del 2024I bought the Arc as I was super impressed with everything about it from the sound quality, small package, versatility and much more. Being that I am a big time movie buff, and love to listen to music, one component, in my opinion that is an absolute must, is thundering bass. Bass rounds out the completeness of any sound package. I looked at the Sonos Sub (Ben 3), and wanted a side by side comparison with the Sub Mini. The specs on both are super impressive, but I had a space constraint and didn't have much room. So I decided to go with the Sub Mini.
The Sub Mini packs a punch that even shocked me. I brought it home set it up with my Arc, and could not believe my ears. The Sub Mini delivers sound that you can not only hear, but feel as well. Even at low volume, the full rich bass is clean. At higher volume levels in movies, it puts you right into the action as you are immersed in sound that compliments that Arc tremendously. I feel that the Sub Mini is the best addition I could make to the Arc. It completes the Arc, which alone delivers fabulous sound.
If you want to fill your entertainment experience with complete sound, simply add the Sub Mini to your Sonos system and watch it change everything all over again. 5 stars from me!
